In 2010, the Equality Act was legislated to protect nine characteristics. These are: age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage or civil partnership (in employment only), pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation.
Citizens Advice explain this more:
Intersectionality is an analytical framework for understanding how aspects of a person's social and political identities combine to create different modes of discrimination and privilege. More than 30 years ago Kimberlé Crenshaw coined the term “intersectionality” in a paper as a way to help explain the oppression of African-American women.

With a focus on intersectionality one should develop the skills necessary to respectfully communicate with peers, engage in thoughtful dialogue around complex topics, and deepen one's understanding of the ways in which diversity, equity, and inclusion are relevant to everyone.
